Kenya’s move towards green mobility is accelerating at a remarkable pace, driven by a sharp increase in registrations over the last few years.

Official data released by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) highlights a dramatic upward trajectory in the country’s electric vehicle ecosystem between 2019 and mid-2025. What began as a niche market has rapidly evolved into a mainstream automotive trend.

In 2019, Kenya’s electric vehicle presence was minimal, with only 194 registered units nationwide. Growth remained modest initially, rising slightly to 300 units in 2020, before climbing to 584 units in 2021. The market crossed its first major psychological milestone in 2022, breaching the four-figure mark to hit 1,059 registere d vehicles.

However, the true tipping point occurred between 2022 and 2023, when registrations more than tripled in a single year to reach 3,753 units.

This momentum has shown no signs of slowing down. By 2024, the number of registered electric vehicles rose to 5,294 units. The latest figures compiled through June 2025 reveal that the cumulative number of registered electric vehicles in Kenya has officially climbed to 6,442 units.
